Tornado damage in Ringgold, GA

Print
These are a few pictures of the devastating tornado and damage from Ringgold, GA (April 27, 2011).  My parents live 1/2 mile away from where the tornado touched down.  I give thanks to God for their protection and continue to pray for those who lost loved ones, homes, and possessions.

My friends' home was in the path of the tornado.  They are fine but will have numerous home repairs including a new roof, ceilings, etc.  My husband and son spent the day working on the roof while other unknown volunteers cut-up the trees which were tossed here and there on their property.  Pictures to come.

Eight people are dead after severe weather rocked Catoosa County on Wednesday evening. Rescue crews were searching several heavily-damaged businesses for survivors, and witnesses reported seeing a tornado touch down in the area.

The road (I believe) heading to my friends' home.

Please be in prayer for all the families who were affected by the storms which ravaged so much of the southeast United States.

P.S.  We were without power for 20 hours and had no damage.  During the 3rd wave of storms, we could see "green" in the sky indicative of a tornado.  Also, we watched debris fall from the sky including shingles, insulation, and vents.

Spring Garden 2011

Due to the severe storms and tornados around Chattanooga, TN, and Ringgold, GA, this post was incomplete.

Please click HERE for my garden update last week.

We have been without power since 6 PM Wednesday evening and don't expect power to be back on until Friday.

My parents live in Ringgold, GA, where tornados cut a path over 1-2 miles long about 3/4 mile from their house.  They are fine (and have power) so here I type!  Thank God for their extra freezer as it is saving all of my meat!

The Girl in the Gatehouse... a book review

Print
Hatteras Girl

Written in Jane Austen-style, Julie Klassen introduces us to Mariah Aubrey.  At the age of 19, she has been sent away from the only family she knows to live with a distant relative, Aunt Fran (aka Mrs. Prin-Hallsey).  Upon arriving at Windrush Court, she and her female companion, Miss Dixon, are sent directly to the gatehouse - their new home.

What would cause a family to knowingly estrange their own daughter?  Written in historical context, Mariah's character had been called into question.  Did she compromise herself with a gentleman or was it part of the gossip-mill of the day?

As Mariah and Miss Dixon settle into their new home, she meets her aunt's step-son Hugh.  He openly despises her aunt and wishes her gone.  He quickly gets his wish as Aunt Fran passes away and he becomes the master of Windsor Court.  While living at the gatehouse, she turns to the only way she knows to make a living.... writing novels in secret.  (During the 1800s, it was considered improper for ladies to write and the smallest hint of impropriety could change a woman's life forever... not for the good)

With the help of her brother, she is able to sell her first novel to a publisher in London.  While she is working on her second, Hugh leases the estate to Captain Bryant, a naval officer.  Hugh sends a letter to Mariah implying the Captain has imposed a new monthly rent.   Will she be able to pay it?  If not, will he allow her to stay?  When she meets the Captain, she is only cordial, not friendly.

Captain Matthew Bryant is intrigued by the beautiful, mysterious girl in the gatehouse.   While he gets settled in, he begins a plan to win back the heart of Isabella.  Will he win her back, or risk his plans - and his heart- for the woman in the gatehouse?

I enjoyed The Girl in the Gatehouse.  As with all historical fiction books, I love how the authors intertwine the historical setting with characters with whom you can relate.  Mariah - sent away and uses her God-given ability to earn money, Miss Dixon - her who agrees to be "exiled" with her, Captain Bryant - chivalrous, gentlemanly, Mr. Martin - Aunt Fran's assistant who is willed to Mariah at her death, Captain Prince - a long-lost naval man who is living at the poorhouse, Maggie - a child at the poorhouse, and the list goes on.  Many women were authors during this time; yet, they used non de plumes.  Only after they became known did they use their real names.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Bethany House Publisher.

Easter

Luke 24.1-12

Jesus Has Risen
1 "On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’8 Then they remembered his words.  9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened."

Hallelujah, He is risen;
He is risen indeed, Hallelujah!

Spring Garden 2011

Good News!  Good News!  Good News!

The window screen worked!  Mr. Squirrel did not eat any more of my seeds.  I removed the window screen because the snow peas were pushing up against it.  After I removed it, I found the green beans had burst up overnight!  Check it out...

lower left corner: radishes
lower right corner: beets
top left corner: snow peas
top right corner: green beans

radishes

green beans

snow peas

The window screens were just the ticket to saving the seeds!

Next, with the help of my darling daughter, we completed the trellis..... tada!

If you look closely enough, you will see a tomato plant being woven into the trellis squares.

Now the question is:

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Happy Gardening!

Good Friday Scripture

Good Friday

Mark 15.16-47
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b]
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
The Burial of Jesus
42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid."

Dear Father,

Thank you for sending Jesus to die in my place and accepting His perfect sacrifice so I may be reconciled to You.

Amen
