Early Spring Garden 2012

Print

Ahh, spring gardens are popping up all over the Chattanooga area.  I'm a bit behind the rest... so what's new!  Since I was, ummm, sort of late, I bought my romaine, buttercrisp lettuce and spinach plants from Lowe's.  Then, just when I was ready to get them planted, our area was scheduled for 2 severe storms over a 5 day period.  Ok, so now we wait.  Finally I was able to get them in the square-foot garden on Sunday (3/4/12).  As I sit and type, we are now expecting frost tonight with a low around 26 F.  Can you say I feel jinxed?!?!  So now my garden looks like this....

On the bright side, our two relatively new Red Maple trees survived our crazy winter weather.  Aren't these blooms and seeds amazing?

Well, that's all I have to report this week.

This weekend's plans:
potting strawberry plants
planting radishes in the garden
planting herbs indoors to transplant later
praying the lettuces make it through the crazy weather

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Happy Gardening!

Blessings,

  2. Wow, those maple tree leaves look beautiful. We don't have them here in India. This summer I'm planning on growing mint leaves as we use them a lot in our curries!

  3. I'm in Atlanta and we had a freeze this morning too! Just when I was thinking of putting some veggies out early since it's been so warm already. Red Maples are such gorgeous trees!

  5. I have lettuce starts that I am waiting to plant out--supposed to go down to 28 degrees tonight, so that put a damper on things! But well done--it looks like yours are very well covered, so they should be fine. And those red maple seeds--I haven't seen any that red before--beautiful!

  10. Good for you for covering them up- not sure I would have, since I'm horribly lazy. :-) I had no idea red maple "blooms" looked like that! I thought we had a red maple at another house, but it didn't do that, so now I'm not sure!

    Thanks for sharing!

  11. I know what you mean. We are supposed to get into the 20s tonight, which is very unusual for Northern Coastal California. I have to get my stuff started inside this week too! The trees are beautiful.

  15. No matter how many times I hear or read that verse from Ecclesiastes I get something a little different from it. I heard it again at a funeral on Monday, and was surprised, again, at the new slant God put on it for me as I heard it. Isn't it amazing how our circumstances can change what we hear into what we NEED to hear?
