Spring Garden - 2011

Print
Happy Spring!

I have enjoyed planting the garden this year.  Unfortunately, the weather has been far from cooperative.  Today, I finished the early planting with the help of my son, Matt.  Take a look...

Vegies: broccoli, tomato, snow peas, carrots, green beans

We put window screening over the seeds to keep out our very hungry squirrel who thinks they are for him!

Vegies: romaine lettuce, tomato plants, broccoli, spinach, radishes, beets, carrots

Yes, Mr. Squirrel likes radish seeds, too!

After the seeds sprout, I'll remove the screening and pray Mr. Squirrel is no longer interested in the young plants.

I am hopeful that the romaine lettuce will survive (after the damage the hail did).
I see salads in our near future!

The tomato plant is blooming; another sign that it survived the crazy weather here.

So, how is your garden growing?  What have you learned from previous year's gardening that has helped you this year?

  1. Hi, I'm stopping through from The Oregon Cottage Garden Party. I have 4 kids too. Nice blog! I like your creative squirrel solution! so far, squirrels don't seem to bother my garden. I found some cute little footprints in one of my beds yesterday, though. I wonder if I should be worried? (um, I turned around after writing this and noticed that one of my hens seems to have gotten into the garden and doesn't know how to get out. I guess SHE'S a bigger problem than any possible squirrel attacks here!)

  2. Your garden looks great! I'm surprised our squirrels haven't tried to nibble at our veggies yet.

  3. I like the idea of using screen to keep out the critters. I use bird netting which seems to work well while the plants are small.
