Late June Garden 2012

Print

Right when I thought I had a little wisdom about gardening, our area hits temperatures between 90 and 100 F AND no pop-up thunderstorms that we usually have in these conditions.  So, what does this mean to me?

Stupid questions like...

How much and how often do I need to water?

Why do the stinkbugs like my squash plants?

Why is pruning so scary?

These past weeks I have been enjoying zucchini, bell peppers, a few plum tomatoes, cucumbers, and a couple spaghetti squash.  Unfortunately, the spaghetti squash plant kicked the bucket.

The squash plants look a bit stressed, but they are still producing!  I did replace the yellow squash a few weeks ago and look forward to eating the fruits of my labor.  I had been rooting a tomato branch, so I planted it in the container vacated by the spaghetti squash plant.

Over the past couple of days, I  have been pruning  yellowing branches from the tomato plants.  Depending on which article you read or who you ask, the yellowing means either too much watering or too little.  Can you say I'm confused!?!?

Apparently I'm doing something right because all of the plants are heavy laden with fruit!  The cucumber (far left) and all the tomato plants...

The pepper plants are taking off.  I'm still losing leaves, but the plants themselves are healthy and producing.

Since last check-in, the green beans and snow peas have broken through and seem to be doing well.  I was able to find some simple bamboo poles for them to climb.  Check it out...

I hope and pray your gardens are producing both wonderful vegetables and fruits, but also georgeous flower blossoms.  Until next time...

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Happy Gardening!

  1. You garden is looking good to me Ellen. Our squash didn't do well this year! But my okra has really blessed us. My tomatoes are all coming in at one time and I'm the only one that eats them at my house so needless to say I am eating mater sandwiches for breakfast too! LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  2. Its official you definitely have a green thumb. I envy your ability to grow so many vegetables. Fortunately my son had the ability to plant something and it will grow. He is my green thumb.
It is good when you can plant food and provide naturally grown produce to your meals.

  6. Your garden is so lovely and productive! I really like the tomato/cuke trellis that you have set up--it looks like it works well. And I know what you mean about being afraid to prune--I feel the same way a lot of the time. I wish I could send you some of our Pacific Northwest rain and cool weather that we're having today, and wish you could send us some hot weather! Have a great week!

  8. Love those bamboo poles! Your garden is doing so well. I think with temps in the 90's, you'd need to water everyday. Continued blessings...

  9. Everything is looking wonderful! I just cleared out a massive winter squash plant, and I'll be replanting the cleared bed today, probably with beans.
