Spring Break ~ 2010

Print
Now that our school is officially taking this week off for spring break, what do I do with myself?  That, unfortunately, is not a difficult question to answer.

Here are my plans:

1. Clean my house and possibly the garage    [House is clean  : )   Garage is not...]
2. Rearrange furniture to accomodate "hand-me-overs!"  (This goes hand-in-hand with cleaning the house!)    [DONE!]
3. Plan our totally eclectic history/literature for when we begin school again on April 5th
4. Go food shopping... with an actual list and coupons!
5. Spend quality time with the family, especially my handsome hubby!
6. Relax?!?!?  (not sure when)

[Comments in blue have been updated as of April 4, 2010.]

What are your plans for your spring/Easter break?

Do not fear, for I (God) am with you..

It has been a rollercoaster of a week.  I had been monitoring a lump in my b***** for about a month and decided it wasn't going away or getting any smaller; I needed to see the doctor and have further tests.  I informed my wonderful husband before church Sunday morning.  Needless to say, he was taken completely by surprise.

I saw my doctor on Thursday morning and had my mammogram and ultrasound that afternoon.  By God's great mercy and grace, both tests came back "normal."

For all the women who have walked this path before me, I applaud you.  It isn't easy to acknowledge a lump and then have to call it by name.  The fear is overwhelming.  I kept mentally singing the song from Isaiah 43 (You are Mine).  "Do not fear, for I (God) am with you; I have called you by name, you are Mine...."

This geography website is great for US and/or World Geography.  Maps can be printed and labeled by your student for a more "hands-on" approach.  The site also has online games to learn for the visual learners.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Hitting the mid-year slump

Print
I don't believe I am the only home educator who hits the mid-year slump. I am as tired as the students of "school," schedules, and tests.  I am planning on changing the way we "do" school during April and May.  We will still have lessons to complete, but we are going to step back from the textbook approach for history and do more student-directed learning.  I know they will enjoy this, but it will be a stretch for me and my personality!  We will be learning about WWI, WWII, and other wars/conflicts (1900s-now) that involved numerous countries.  We will continue to incorporate literature and composition alongside history.

How do you persevere through this time of the school year?

A Lesson in Economics

Our family has been going through "car emergencies" over the past 10 days.  My husband's car needs repair work equivalent to the 'Blue Book' value of the car.  Should we fix or replace?  Fixing is less expensive now, but more things can go wrong in the days and months ahead which could potentially be a lot of money.  Replace?  We have enjoyed NOT having a car payment for the last 13 months!

Well, we have decided that a "new to us" new car would be the best decision.  Rod is a realtor and needs a reliable vehicle for his business.  He will be driving a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox beginning tomorrow.  What a difference from his previous car!

My van (2004 Chevolet Venture Van) had the privilege of $800 worth of brake work on Thursday.  All the horrible noise is gone!  Praise the Lord!  Now, our prayer is that the van will not need any more major work for a while.  The van is the "Driver's Education" vehicle for our 16 year old twins.  Brakes are a good thing!

What a learning opportunity for the teenagers to watch us work through the car decision. We all needed a reminder to "tighten our belts" during this time and not spend needlessly.

How are you getting along during this trying economic time?  What ways are you saving money or spending less?
